In detail
What European social networks do differently
Twitter/X and Bluesky are owned by US companies and are therefore subject to the CLOUD Act, which gives US authorities access to user data. European platforms operate under GDPR and do not finance themselves through ad-based profiling. Mastodon is a non-profit (Mastodon gGmbH, Berlin) and part of the Fediverse, communicating via the open ActivityPub protocol, without algorithms and without advertising. LeafPlaza (LeafPlaza OÜ, Estonia) is Bluesky-compatible and stores user data exclusively in the EU. Open protocols and federated networks prevent any single company from controlling all communication.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a federated network like the Fediverse mean?
In a federated network there is no central operator. Instead, many independent servers (instances) communicate with each other via a shared protocol. Mastodon uses the open ActivityPub protocol: users choose an instance of their choice or run their own and can still interact across all instances. No single company controls the entire network.
Is my data stored in the EU on European platforms?
LeafPlaza (LeafPlaza OÜ, Estonia) stores user data exclusively in the EU, with hosting components in Lithuania and Switzerland. With Mastodon, the storage location depends on the chosen instance, and many European instances run on servers in the EU. Unlike Twitter/X or Bluesky, these providers are subject to GDPR and not to the CLOUD Act.
Is there advertising or algorithmic feeds?
Mastodon has no algorithm curating content, the timeline is chronological. There is neither advertising nor tracking. LeafPlaza funds itself through paid accounts and is also ad-free, with no data sharing. This removes the ad-based profiling that defines the business model of the large US platforms.
Which platform is right for me?
Mastodon suits you if decentralized control, an open protocol and a free, donation-funded non-profit network matter to you. LeafPlaza targets residents of the EU, EFTA or the UK who want a Bluesky-compatible network with human certification per account and EU data storage. Mastodon is openly registrable, while LeafPlaza relies on verified, paid accounts.
Can I self-host a social network?
Mastodon is open source and can be fully self-hosted, from running your own instance to complete control of the infrastructure. This lets you freely choose the server location, for example within the EU. LeafPlaza is not open source and is offered as a hosted service by LeafPlaza OÜ.
