What European audio software does differently
Most DAWs and plugins listed here are downloadable software that runs locally on Windows, macOS, or Linux and does not require a permanent cloud connection during use. Providers such as Ableton, Bitwig, FabFilter, Arturia, FL Studio, u-he, Softube, Toontrack, and MAGIX are based inside the EU and process account and licence data in line with GDPR. Because audio processing happens on your own machine, projects and recordings usually never leave the system. For cloud-based services such as Auphonic, audio files are processed on the provider servers, and here too the company is based in the EU (Austria).

Frequently Asked Questions
Do European DAWs and plugins require a constant internet connection?
Most products listed here are downloadable software that runs locally on your own machine. Ableton Live, Bitwig Studio, FL Studio, FabFilter, u-he, Softube, Toontrack, and MAGIX do not need a permanent cloud connection during use. An online connection is mainly used for activation, updates, and downloading samples or presets.
Where are my project files and recordings stored?
For the locally running software in this category, projects, recordings, and audio files stay on your own drive. They are not automatically uploaded to a provider cloud. One exception is Auphonic: this service is cloud-based, and the uploaded audio files are processed on the servers of the Austrian provider.
Does the CLOUD Act apply to this audio software?
The CLOUD Act concerns companies subject to US jurisdiction and is mainly relevant for cloud-based data processing. The providers listed here are based in the EU (Germany, Austria, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Sweden) and are not subject to this regulation. For software that runs purely locally, the CLOUD Act is barely relevant anyway, since no data is transferred to a provider.
Are there free options?
u-he offers several plugins free of charge and without functional limitations, including the synthesizers Tyrell N6, Podolski, and Zebralette. Auphonic includes roughly two hours of audio post-production per month in its free tier. Most DAWs and plugin suites are paid, but many makers offer time-limited trial versions.
Which software suits which use case?
For full music production, complete DAWs such as Ableton Live, Bitwig Studio, FL Studio, and the MAGIX range (Samplitude, Sequoia) are a good fit. For mixing and mastering, the plugin makers FabFilter and Softube are designed accordingly, and for synthesizers and virtual instruments u-he and Arturia. Toontrack specialises in virtual drums, while Auphonic and ClearVoiceLive focus on speech and vocal processing in post-production.
Do the programs also run on Linux?
Bitwig Studio has offered native Linux support alongside Windows and macOS since its first release. Most other DAWs and plugins in this category are designed for Windows and macOS. Auphonic is a web service and works platform-independently through the browser.
